Training for clinical providers, educators, school counselors and administrators who work with Filipino clients and students


OBJECTIVES

 

1) To become familiar with Filipino history, cultural beliefs, values and stigma as they relate to health, mental illness, substance use and help-seeking behaviors.

 

2) To identify potential barriers and challenges when working with Filipino adults and youth who are struggling with mental, emotional health, and/or substance use issues.

 

3) To learn strategies for better engaging and maintaining effective relationships with Filipino clients, consumers and students.

 

Speakers include Dr. Dawn Mabalon, SFSU Asst Professor of History, teachers, administrators and clinical providers who work with Filipinos, and Filipinos with lived experiences of mental health and/or substance use issues.


LUNCH and CERTIFICATES OF ATTENDANCE will be provided.

The mission of the Filipino Mental Health Initiative is to improve the well-being of Filipinos in San Mateo County by reducing the stigma of mental health, increasing access to services, and further empowering the community through outreach and engagement.  We strive to connect individuals to appropriate health, mental health and social services, and ensure culturally appropriate services through provider collaboration.
